Mrs. Susan Nations, Principal
Welcome to Wilkinson Elementary where thinkers tinker, create and collaborate. We absolutely love our incredible learning community and are proud to be the only STEAM focused public elementary school in Sarasota County.
Wilkinson students are provided STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) integrated learning opportunities daily. All STEAM students prepare for their future with hands-on activities that broaden their intellect and nurture their inner strengths. Students are challenged to solve real-life problems by thinking beyond the expected. In addition, they actively learn skills for success in 21st-century careers: collaboration, communication, citizenship, critical thinking and creativity. Academic achievement soars in this stimulating environment.
In addition to classroom STEAM lessons and learning, we offer a full range of enrichment classes including: Art, Dance and Movement, Music, PE, Science and Makerspace. Our Makerspace is a place where "thinkers tinker" with ideas and design concepts as they deepen understanding of the Engineering/Design process. And we now have STEAM Station: Where Thinkers Tinker™--a hands-on learning zone where students can deepen their understanding of Science and Engineering concepts. Students will also learn in our STEAM Courtyard …where nature and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) come together for meaningful learning experiences. Our courtyard includes a beautiful butterfly garden with interactive kaleidoscope, music wall, observation tower, perioscope, gear wall and more; this outdoor learning area invites students to investigate and collaborate as they deepen their understanding.
Our teachers and staff work diligently to provide meaningful learning opportunities in every classroom. It is our goal to ensure that each child has a successful school experience that both helps them learn and prepares them for their future. We also strive to provide every child many opportunities for extension and enrichment outside the classroom. Our campus is rich with outdoor learning spaces that invite immersive hands-on learning. Additionally, our teachers help plan meaningful field trips and explorations both on and off campus that enrich the curriculum and the entire school experience.
Wilkinson has an incredible amount of community involvement. Our volunteer program includes parents and community members who give in so many ways including classroom support and mentoring programs. We are thankful for each and every volunteer who is committed to our students and families. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer on our campus, please be sure to complete the volunteer application. It takes a few days for your application to be approved.
In addition to the day-to-day learning that happens in classrooms on campus, we have many opportunities for student and family engagement after the school day. Plan to attend one of our STEAM Family Nights where you can interact with your child in our learning spaces in fun and unique ways or enjoy monthly Saturday Fun Days--free play and activity time for students and families--provided by our community partners. Throughout the year, we offer other enrichment activities designed for you and your family to spend time on our campus learning, playing and growing together. Your child may also enjoy taking part in one of our many after school clubs such as: Coding, Chorus, Running Club, Dance, Yoga, Crafts, Spanish and More!
YOU are a vital part of your child's learning journey! Get involved by being at school regularly and on time, talk about work habits, attend meetings at school and check grades on the parent portal regularly. These are important aspects of a successful education. If you ever need assistance, don't hesitate to reach out and let us know. We want to be your partner in learning!
If you haven't been to our campus recently, please come by for a visit. We love to show people our special learning space here in Sarasota! We look forward to sharing with you the unique learning opportunities we have as we work together to build children's futures!
