IMPORTANT UPDATES BELOW
We have an important update regarding staffing and student schedules at Sarasota Middle School. Due to district budget cuts and changes in enrollment, SMS has experienced a reduction of two teaching units. As a result, we must adjust some student schedules to balance classes and ensure that instruction continues at a high level. Please know that we are working carefully to make these changes in a way that has the least impact on students. However, some students will experience changes to their teachers and/or class schedules. These adjustments will not take effect until after the completion of the PM1 FAST testing. Families of affected students will be notified in advance of their child’s new schedule and teacher.
Because of this rescheduling process, requests for encore (elective) changes will be postponed until core class adjustments have been finalized. We understand that this may be difficult, as students have already built relationships with their teachers and peers in their classes. We share in that empathy and recognize the challenges these transitions can bring. Unfortunately, these changes are beyond our control, but please know that our staff is committed to supporting students through this process.
Additionally, to give teachers and students time to adjust and build new classroom communities, our SMS Open House will be postponed. We anticipate rescheduling it for the last week of September and will communicate the finalized date soon. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate these changes together.
Our priority remains ensuring that every student has a safe, supportive, and successful school experience.

DRESS CODE
After reviewing expectations in grade-level forums this week, we began full enforcement of the dress code Friday. Remember, students who are not dressed in appropriate school attire will be asked to change into a PE shirt or shorts. Please review the dress code infographic below and attached. The principal has the final say in the appropriateness of school attire.
SAFETY
If your child is a walker, bicycle rider, or E-Bike rider, please talk to your child about not crossing in front of the car line entrance/exit. It is not a cross walk. Additionally, students riding E-bikes are not allowed at any time in our car line. All students should walk their bicycles and E-bikes until they are off campus. Thank you!
