Principal's Welcome

Greetings LNS “Lightning’ Family,

I am overjoyed to be the next Principal at such a fabulous school. There exists a legacy of excellence established by the superb leadership of Principal Nancy Dubin. She has given many years of service that are indeed laudable. I wish Nancy the best during her retirement.

I am a native of Tallahassee, FL but spent the first 4 years of my life in Ansbach, Germany. After my father’s 4 year active duty assignment in Germany, my family moved back to the US. My Father (Raymond, Sr.) is a retired Lt. Colonel in the US Army. He is also retired from the state system as a computer lab technician at the School of Business & Industry at Florida A&M University. My mother (Vivian) is a retired educator. She loves teaching so much that she returned to the profession a few years ago as Reading Coach at a high school in Tallahassee. She also formerly served as an assistant principal and principal for several years.

I’m the eldest of nine, 5 biological siblings, and 3 adopted sisters. My family is my rock. I am so blessed to have them in my life. A few of my family members are also involved in education. My second oldest brother (Jonathan) is a 3rd grade teacher in Duval County Schools and my fourth oldest brother (Jereme) is an assistant principal in Lee County Schools. My biological sister (Jade), who is also the youngest, is currently a substitute teacher. She is working toward her certification in elementary education. I have been married to my beautiful wife Selena for a little over two years. I have one biological daughter (RayVan) and 3 stepsons. My youngest stepson (Trenton) will be attending Venice High School this upcoming school year as a freshman.

As for my professional background, I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education K-12 from Florida A&M University in 1999 and in 2006, a Master of Education Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of South Florida. I taught vocal music in Tallahassee from 1999-2003 (two years middle, two years elementary) prior to my employment with Sarasota County Schools. While employed in Sarasota County Schools, I taught vocal music at Heron Creek Middle School from Aug. 2003- Oct. 2007. My students worked very hard and earned “Superior” ratings at annual Music Performance Assessment events. One memorable leadership experience while a teacher at Heron Creek, was my involvement in the curriculum for character education. I served as the Community of Caring coordinator in which I helped the school earn the “State School of Character” recognition from the Golden Rule foundation in 2006. In October 2007, I became the assistant principal at Heron Creek Middle where I’ve proudly served from 2007-2012 and then 2014-2016. I also spent two years serving as assistant principal at Woodland Middle School from 2012-2014. I was named assistant principal of the month for Sarasota County Schools in October 2009 and in February 2015.

This will be my first experience as Principal to which I am extremely honored. My vision for LNS is to build upon its rich legacy by setting high expectations, supported by reflective instructional practices and uncompromising commitment. I believe in a leadership approach that values input and promotes shared decision making. I am confident that you will experience my genuine care for students and willingness to work closely with teachers, parents, and community members to help LNS arrive at the next level. The best way to accomplish goals is to first surround yourself with a positive team. The team at LNS have made me feel very welcome, truly a pot of gold. I am very passionate about empowering students to help them achieve their greatest success. Every decision we make as educators should have student achievement at its core. We must always reflect by asking ourselves how we can better serve our students. I look forward to this next phase of my educational career. I plan to give my all to LNS—nothing less.
