
Encore Selections 2023-2024
Beginning Spanish
Students will learn the basics of the Spanish vocabulary, grammar, short conversation along with questions and answers that have significant usage in their daily life.
Chorus
Students will develop vocal technique using classical and contemporary music. They will explore music in various languages, understand musical terms, learn to read sheet music, and develop their sight-reading skills. Students are required to perform at least two-three evening concerts throughout the year (after regular school hours). Advanced Choir and Intermediate Choir placement is determined by Choir Director and the student through an audition process, or through a recommendation from a previous Choral Director. Beginning Choir is open to any student in any grade level and open to anyone who wants to be there.
Band
Students in this class will learn to play band instruments in the Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion families. Ensembles include Beginning Band, Intermediate (Symphonic), and Advanced Placement (Wind Ensemble, and Wildcat Jazz Band). They will develop instrumental techniques, learn to read music and continue their understanding of music theory. Students are required to perform at least two-three evening concerts throughout the year (after regular school hours) and practice their instrument outside of class. Intermediate and Advanced Band placement is determined by the Director of Bands and the student through an audition process, or through a recommendation from a previous Band Director. Beginning Band is open to any student in any grade level and open to anyone who wants to be there.
Crime Scene Investigation (CSI)
Crime Scene Investigation explores the exciting world of forensics - the application of science for solving crimes. This course is filled with exploration and lab investigations that delve into how crimes are solved through a scientific lens, including disciplines of scientific study such as chemistry and biology. Through Tech-Active activities, students will have the opportunity to explore virtual crimes scenes and examine evidence under digital microscopes. Exciting guest speakers from local law enforcement agencies and field trips to universities where forensics are studied are also included in this enriching course.
Dance
Dance is offered for beginning to advanced levels, the curriculum focuses on the study of all forms of dance; Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, ballet and other forms of dance. Students will learn basic to advanced skills and techniques to begin their dance education as well as dance history, anatomy, injury prevention and Nutrition. Students will be required to participate in a fall and spring dance production (after regular school hours).
Exploring Technology (7th & 8th Grade)
Students will gain experience in various computer applications in the business and design industry, using variety of digital interactive processes. Students will create movies and animated films using Adobe Photoshop, Windows Movie Maker, and other similar programs. This program is geared to prepare students for more advanced programs at the high school level. Upon completion of this course, students will have the opportunity to test for Certification Credentials and/or Digital Tools. This is a full year course.
Understanding Music
Students will be given, an introduction to the various musical ensembles and mediums that they can participate in at Woodland MS and beyond. Students will learn about basic music theory, music history, the Concert Band, the String Orchestra, Concert Choir, Percussion studies, World Drumming, and Musical Theater. Students will also have an introductory unit on Acoustic Guitar and the Piano through simple songs and exercises. This course gives the opportunity to explore the various areas of music with the intent that they will consider continuing into another music class in the future such as Band, Chorus, or Orchestra. This course is only 1 semester.
Introduction to Technology (6th Grade)
Students will be introduced to areas of technology and the design and problem-solving processes using manipulative skills while working cooperatively in team activities. Students will learn and apply engineering design, problem solving, and teamwork skills to solve a variety of problems in the areas of drafting/design, aerospace, construction, and a variety of other technological areas. Students will explore career pathways in a variety of technical fields while developing skills that are critical for success. Upon completion of this course, students will have the opportunity to test for Certification Credentials and/or Digital Tools. This is a semester course.
Physical Education
Students will participate in a variety of physical fitness activities which include regular running, work on weightlifting equipment, and skills development. Students will also participate regularly in various team sports such as basketball, flag football, soccer, volleyball and many other athletic activities while learning the essentials of good sportsmanship. Students are required to dress out daily. Uniforms may be purchased for $8.00 for shirt and $8.00 for shorts or $15.00 for entire uniform.
Spanish 1
Students will practice common vocabulary, phrases and concepts necessary for daily interpersonal interaction. Students will gain a working knowledge of the basic structure of the target language using the present tense. They will engage in activities such as, the creation and performance of dialogues, question and answer situations, and projects all centered in thematic units. Students will talk about topics and situations that are of interest to them, especially talk about the daily routines of student life in present tense. This class is a High School Credit, therefore the expectation and rigor are higher than a regular class for beginners. Requirements: 3 or higher in FSA ELA score. This year since there won’t be an FSA they may require the signature of their ELA teachers or the Spanish teacher.
Orchestra
Students in these classes will learn to play instruments from the violin family (Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass). They will develop instrumental techniques, learn to read music, and continue their understanding of music theory. Students will perform two or more evening concerts throughout the year (after regular school hours) and practice their instrument outside of class. Any students, with or without instruments, are able to join Beginning Orchestra classes. Incoming 6th graders with previous experience (should know how to use the bow well) may join Beginning Honors Class. Intermediate and Advanced placement is determined by Orchestra Director and the student through an audition process, or through a recommendation from a previous Orchestra Director.
Theatre
Students will learn the basics of acting, theatre history, playwriting, script interpretation, and other foundational skills to prepare them for advanced theatre courses. This is a PERFORMANCE-based course. Students will be expected to perform in front of audiences ranging from classmates to the public. This course is a MANDATORY PRE-REQUISITE for potential placement in advanced theatre classes in subsequent school years.
TV Production
This class will include technical theatre elements. Students will learn the various aspects of theatre technology (lighting, sound, directing, props, set building and design, etc). Students in this class assist in building, painting, and decorating sets for the various performances throughout the school year and will even be asked to volunteer to operate various equipment for school concerts and performances. Students will also be responsible for organizing and producing the WMS News daily. They will learn to operate various pieces of technology and master public speaking skills (being an anchor). Each student is EXPECTED to rotate through ALL positions, including anchor.
Visual Art
(semester class -18 weeks): Students will develop their own creativity while exploring 2D and 3D art techniques and processes. They will be introduced to the art elements, principles and artists in history while creating works of art. This semester long class provides students with some materials however a general art kit of color pencils, markers and crayons are required and this class is a prerequisite for the Advanced Art class.
ENCORE SELECTIONS FOR 2023/2024
Students at Woodland Middle School have six periods each day. Four periods are required core classes. Two periods are for student choice Encore/Explo/Physical Education (PE). We will do our best to accommodate student's top choices; however, please keep in mind that not all requests can be granted due to scheduling constraints.
