About the Aquascience Program

Aquascience Students

Riverview High School offers the premier experiential science learning pathway to prepare students for integrated careers in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM).

From robust career preparatory pathways in marine science research and engineering to the widest variety of elective sciences offered in the area — students explore a variety of scientific fields of study and the tools that will ensure their success in STEAM professional environments.

The Stars to Starfish program, as part of the IB Career Pathway program, builds competencies in three core areas: Research For students who are interested in pursuing STEAM careers, the Stars to Starfish program provides direct experience with scientific research, preparing them for success in university settings.

Our Impact and Partnerships

  • Our robust research partnerships with Mote Marine Aquarium, New College, University of Florida, the UF Tropical Aquaculture Lab ensure real research experiences.

  • Nearly 4,000 students have learned about marine science research through participation in the rigorous Riverview marine science curriculum.

  • Tag and release snook program in collaboration with Mote Marine Laboratory’s Aquaculture Park.

IB Marine Course Description

IB Marine Science is a college-level, “school-based syllabus” course authorized by the IB Organization, tailored for schools to fulfill requirements for both IB diploma program (IBDP) and IB career-pathway (IBCP) subject areas. It delves into oceanography, examining the chemical, physical, geological, and biological properties of the ocean. The curriculum emphasizes inquiry-based learning, hands-on laboratory work, and field investigations, utilizing tools and technologies employed by marine scientists. Students develop skills such as crafting written responses to scientific queries, analyzing data through graphs, interpreting patterns, and conducting statistical analyses. Successful completion is necessary for college credit. IB Marine serves as a prerequisite for the Stars to Starfish Internship Program and fulfills the Group 4 (Experimental Science) requirement for the IB diploma.

IB Career Program - Marine Science

The Marine Science pathway within the International Baccalaureate Career Program (IBCP) offers and immersive and interdisciplinary experience to understanding the complex ecosystems of marine environments. This specialized program integrates rigorous academic coursework with hands-on experience and service learning projects. It allows our students to foster a deep understanding of marine biology, oceanography, conservation, and environmental sustainability.

Service learning projects are a central component of the IBCP, allowing students to apply their knowledge and skills to address a need in our community and find a solution. Whether conducting water quality assessments, organizing beach cleanups, or assisting with habitat restoration efforts, students actively engage in projects that have tangible impact on local ecosystems and communities.
