Alta Vista Dress Code and Uniforms
Alta Vista Elementary School Uniform Policy
Dress for Success! Uniforms promote safety, school spirit, and success!
Promoting a positive learning environment that is safe and free from distractions is an important part of supporting the achievement of all students. All students are expected to wear a neat and clean school uniform daily. Uniform compliance contributes to each child’s grade in work habits.
Alta Vista students are required to wear our mandatory school uniform.
Uniform Shirts with Logo:
The uniform shirt is a collared polo-style shirt in solid colors of royal blue, green, and red with an embroidered Alta Vista logo. Only Alta Vista logo polo shirts are accepted. Shirts must be tucked in.
Uniform Coordinated Bottoms:
Uniform coordinated bottoms include slacks, shorts, capris, skorts, skirts, and jumpers in navy or khaki.. Length of shorts, skirts/skorts and jumpers must be no more than 2” above the knee. Uniform coordinated shorts or tights are expected to be worn under skirts. Students are required to wear a belt if the coordinate has belt loops. Uniform bottoms do not include sweatpants or athletic apparel, cargo pants, denim jeans, skinny pants, or pants with extra zippers, multiple pockets, stripes or emblems. Baggy shorts which hang below the waist and/or extend to the calves do not adhere to the uniform standards.
Winter Wear/Outerwear:
The Alta Vista logo sweatshirt is available at Alta Vista for cold weather. Solid turtlenecks or long sleeve shirts in matching school colors may be worn in combination with the uniform logo shirt or sweatshirt. Students may wear solid sweaters, jackets, and sweatshirts in matching school colors without a logo during the winter season, but the uniform shirt must be worn underneath. While all other colors are considered “out-of-uniform”, outer coats and jackets of other colors are permitted, but must be removed once inside the classroom.
Shoes:
Closed-toe athletic or fully enclosed dress shoes (no heels or straps on back) must be worn at all times. Sandals, flip-flops, heels, crocs, slides, slippers, and exposed wheelie shoes are not permitted. Athletic shoes are required on P.E. days and are strongly preferred every day due to recess. Only solid colored matching socks are to be worn with uniforms.
Accessories/Hair:
Hair should be of natural color. Hair of any color or style that detracts from student learning is not permitted. Makeup, multicolored jelly bracelets, silly bands, dangling or large hoop earrings (distracting jewelry) are not permitted. Other jewelry that could cause injury or disruption is also prohibited. Temporary tattoos are not permitted. Caps and hats should be removed in school buildings. Bandanas are not allowed.
Field Trips:
Full uniform is required on field trip days.
Spirit Day:
Friday is Spirit Day, and in addition to the regular uniform attire, students are permitted to wear their Alta Vista Spirit Shirts tucked in with the uniform coordinated bottom.
Uniform Assistance/Scholarships:
Uniform scholarships are available for families requiring financial assistance. Forms are available in the school office.
Vendors:
Official uniform shirts with the logo and spirit shirts are available in the school office during normal hours. Prices for uniform shirts are $15.00 each. Orders may be placed on-line through the Alta Vista website or at https://osp.osmsinc.com/sarasotaFL/. Click on Elementary, select Alta Vista. Alta Vista Logo Sweatshirts are available to order in the Fall. Coordinating pants, shorts, skirts and jumpers are available at Wal-Mart, Beall’s, Target, Kmart, and other retail stores.
New Students:
New students will be given a three day grace period in which failure to wear the school uniform will not count against the student’s work habits grade. This will allow parents time to purchase the school uniform and/or to seek assistance for financial aid. The grace period may be extended only upon documentation of the unavailability of the uniform in the appropriate size. Such an extension must be approved by the administrator.
Uniform Enforcement:
In determining the implementation of School Board policies 7.103 and 8.103, Alta Vista School requires the school uniform to be worn as an “appropriate dress for class.” Wearing the school uniform accounts for 20% of the work habits grade. Implementation of the uniform policy as it relates to each student’s work habits grade is outlined in the student/parent handbook.
a) The enforceability of the school uniform policy is directly linked to student employability skills and work habits grades. Families who object to wearing the school uniform, or fail to comply, are encouraged to apply to another school through Sarasota County’s School Choice program.
b) Students who are out of uniform will have points deducted from their work habits grade for each offense which could result in a failing grade in work habits. Students who are not in uniform will be sent to the Clinic. Parents will be called and expected to bring the appropriate uniform to school. In the case where a parent cannot be reached, the student will be changed into a uniform for the day. A Uniform Non-Compliance note will be sent home for each out of uniform offense. After 2 days of non-compliance, a letter will be sent home from the principal and a mandatory meeting will result with the parent or guardian to resolve the issue.
