About Alta Vista

Mission

The mission of Alta Vista Elementary School is to help all students become productive, responsible citizens who will adapt and grow intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically in a changing world.  This will be accomplished by providing learning opportunities in an environment that reflects community, culture, values, and needs.

Initiatives and Accomplishments

Eagle's Nest Volunteer Center
Our Eagle's Nest Volunteer Center in the Media Center provides a warm and inviting home for our students, parents, and community volunteers. It offers opportunities for parents and community members to become an integral part of our school by making a difference in student performance, motivation, and attitude towards school. Throughout the year, we have approximately 100 volunteers working with about 200 students in reading, writing, and math. Additionally, we received community recognition for this program. As a result, other schools in the district are looking at our program as a model to replicate in their schools.

Eagle Eye Newsroom
Our new Eagle Eye News Show is produced daily by our students and broadcast into all classrooms each morning. Our students create, write and produce a broadcast news show that features current and historical events, book reviews, celebrations, performing and fine arts presentations, science experiments, daily announcements, etc. Alta Vista received a The Lights, Camera, Action! Grant through The Leslie and Margaret Weller Arts Education Program of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Inc... We are thankful for their generous funding and support of our News Show. Their gift will continue to live on for many years as more students become involved in creating broadcasts.

"Caught You Being Good" Program
Our "Caught You Being Good" program awards students caught going above and beyond with "Caught You Being Good" coins that they collected or traded in for items in our school store. If students demonstrate good citizenship, quality work, kindness, respect, or courtesy, they are recognized.

Renaissance Awards Program
The Renaissance Awards Program recognizes and rewards student performance and encourages school spirit. During these award ceremonies, we celebrate attendance, citizenship, and academic achievement. Our cheerleaders lead us in cheers and music is played throughout the ceremonies. We appreciate the families and friends who join us to celebrate the achievements of our students!
