Emerging Educator

Funded by the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, the Sarasota County Schools’ Emerging Educator initiative has been established to increase our new teacher pool. The intent of this initiative is to identify volunteers, parents, substitutes, paraprofessionals, and community members (currently holding a bachelor’s degree or greater) that demonstrate characteristics of strong, successful future teachers and desire to pursue a teaching career.

If you are interested in becoming a teacher in Sarasota County Schools, and you currently hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, please consider applying to be a member of our very first Emerging Educator cohort.

You must have a completed instructional application on file with Sarasota County Schools. The instructional application includes two supervisor references, a resume, and original bachelor’s transcripts. (If you are a current substitute, revisit your application and indicate Emerging Educator within “employment preferences”.)

Within the application, under “employment preferences”, interested applicants must check Emerging Educator. This will prompt additional questions to be displayed for the applicant to answer. This is referred to as the narrative application piece and it too needs to be completed.

A Sarasota County School administrator reference is preferred as part of the application packet. The link to the preferred administrator reference form can be found below. The applicant is encouraged to upload it themselves or request that it be emailed from the administrator directly to Danielle Schwied, Staffing Administrator:

Interested applicants must submit a completed application by March 5, 2018 to be considered for the Spring 2018 cohort.

Once cohort members are selected, each participant will be sent an email requesting completion of a drug test, fingerprint, and proof of a physical within the last 12 months. Once HR receives this information, applicants will go into “recommend” status. (Current substitutes will already have this information on file.)

If you are selected to participate in the cohort, you will be expected to work toward securing a Florida teaching certification. (For more details, the certification document link can be found below.) You will also be expected to commit to working in Sarasota County Schools for 3 years. As a member of the cohort, you will receive support toward these goals which can include professional development activities, networking opportunities, mentoring, study materials, and compensation for required testing and course fees in pursuit of your certification.
