Please see training requirements for the specific training needs in your field.

All ESOL Courses are online. You will receive an informational email one week prior to the course start date with instructions on how to begin the course. Please make sure to enter your School District email address upon registration. The email address must be exact. Please view the course calendar for details on when each course is offered.

Course Descriptions

This is to inform ESOL course participants that due to the high number of teachers needing to meet their ESOL requirements, participants who fail to complete an ESOL course will not be allowed to re-register in that same course again.  The alternative will be to register through an outside vendor for a fee, for which the participant will be responsible in order to meet the ESOL requirement.

Sarasota County trains teachers of English Language Learners by offering all of the following courses every year to Sarasota County teachers, counselors, social workers, aides, and administrators. Such training provides teachers with the requisite knowledge and skills to be able to assist English Language Learners to achieve academic success.

Empowering ESOL Teachers/Counselors/
Administrators for Categories II, III and IV - 18 or 60 hrs
- The Empowering ESOL course is designed to help content area teachers gain the skills they need to provide effective instruction to ESOL students in the mainstream classroom. Key concepts and skills are covered from the five ESOL Endorsement courses listed below.

Endorsement Courses for Category I Teachers:

Methods of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) - 60 hrs - This course includes an examination of approaches, methods, and techniques for teaching English as a second language. Participants will demonstrate teaching strategies; develop lesson and unit planning skills; evaluate materials, textbooks, and resources available in the field; and examine issues in testing students of limited English proficiency for placement, diagnosis, exit, and evaluation.

ESOL Curriculum & Materials Development
- 60 hrs - This course will extend a teacher's understanding of how language and culture affect second language learners' participation and learning in classrooms. Students will develop the ability to plan for classrooms with native English speakers and second language learners. They will learn to connect instructional objectives for language development with appropriate and challenging curriculum content, materials, and assessments to create meaningful and equitable learning environments for bilingual children.

Testing & Evaluation of ELL students - 60 hrs - This course looks at traditional, alternative, and standardized assessment and their roles in the education of ELL students. It emphasizes the use of portfolio assessment and other alternatives to document students' learning experiences, meet standards, and connect assessment to instruction.

Cross-cultural Communication & Understanding - 60 hrs - This course will examine issues of language and culture that are relevant for learners of English as a Second Language (ESL). The role of the native language and culture and their influence on learning for language minority students will be a major focus of the course. The course will also provide an introduction to the influence of culture on language learning and communication styles, value and belief systems, and patterns of interaction and behavior.

Applied Linguistics - 60 hrs - Teachers will study the subfields of linguistics. They will demonstrate basic comprehension of first & second language acquisition processes, and will apply their knowledge of linguistics and the second language acquisition process to developing, implementing, and evaluating appropriate instruction.
