SARASOTA
COUNTY, February 8, 2019 – In honor of Black History Month, Sarasota County
Schools recently recognized three talented African American educators for their
impact on and contributions to our community. Future educator Jakobie Green,
current educator Dr. LaShawn Frost and legacy educator Jean Battie, represented
by her husband, Hank Battie, were recognized during a special presentation at
the most recent School Board meeting.
The
school district believes education is a life-long pursuit and is committed to highlighting
future educators— students who have been inspired to pursue a career in the
education field; current educators— a teacher, administrator or staff member
who goes beyond to promote positive outcomes for all students; and legacy
educators – individuals who have worked with the school district to create
change and inspire new generations of students to excel. Each month, Sarasota
County Schools will be recognizing an exemplary group of educators as a
demonstration of our appreciation for their contributions. Please join us as we
“honor our own” in celebration of Black History Month:
Future Educator: Jakobie Green
Jakobie
Green is a sophomore at Booker High School with aspirations to become a teacher
and eventually a judge. He is highly involved with school and community
activities and is continually honing his leadership skills. Jakobie serves as a
student representative on several boards, including CareerSource Suncoast. He
credits his teachers and administrators at Emma E. Booker Elementary, Booker
Middle School and Booker High School for helping him find his inner strength
and talent as he explored clubs and school activities throughout his academic
career.
Current Education: Dr. LaShawn
Frost
Dr.
LaShawn Frost is the principal of Booker Middle School and was recently named
the 2019 Sarasota County Principal of the Year. She has been an inspirational
educator for over 15 years and credits her experience in the “Art of

her appreciation for and understanding of the complexities of leading in 21st
century schools. Dr. Frost is renowned for her leadership prowess and drive to
see all her students and staff achieve greatness.
Legacy Educator: Jean Battie
Mrs. Jean
Battie served as a Sarasota County educator for over 40 years. She is
remembered as a passionate teacher that inspired others to advocate for
children. Mrs. Battie was known for demanding excellence from her students as
well as the community at-large, often inspiring others to act through her own
tenacity, conviction and compassion. Her educational expertise and
unquestionable impact on the community are evident in the legacy she has left
behind – a legacy that will always be remembered and valued.
