SARASOTA COUNTY, September 6, 2018 – Sarasota County Schools is pleased to announce that Joanna Davis-Lanum is the winner of the Florida Art Education Association’s (FAEA) “2018 Florida’s Outstanding Art Educator of the Year Award”.

The FAEA promotes visual arts education in Florida through professional development, service, advancement of knowledge and leadership. FAEA encourages research in art education, holds public discussions, sponsors institutes, conferences and programs; publishes articles, reports and surveys; and works with other related agencies in support of visual arts education. The FAEA awards recognize individuals within the membership who show appreciation for individuals or organizations that have contributed their services in an exemplary way. The “Florida’s Outstanding Art Educator of the Year Award” is one of several given out annually.

“Mrs. Davis-Lanum is truly an asset to the field of education, and we feel very fortunate to have her as a member of our school family,” noted Garden Elementary School Principal Amy Archer. “Joanna has the opportunity to make a positive impact on all 600 students enrolled at our school because of her unique role. On any given day, I can enter her art room and observe students actively engaged in high-quality art projects. Our students thrive under her instruction.”

“It is a true honor to receive this recognition,” said Joanna Davis-Lanum. “I am thrilled to represent Garden Elementary School on such a well-respected, statewide platform. Our children benefit so much from comprehensive arts education. It is a privilege to teach them and exciting to see their creativity bloom and deepen as we move through the curriculum each school year. I am thankful to the FAEA for extending their resources to support art education.”

“FAEA presents annual awards to recognize individuals within the membership who have achieved the highest level of professionalism in art education,” commented Lark Keeler, president of the Florida Art Education Association. “As an organization, we are proud of our award recipients for their service to the profession and the students they teach. Each award winner is an exemplary model of education in the arts and demonstrates extraordinary passion for the important work that they do.”

FAEA will honor Mrs. Davis-Lanum and the additional 2018 award winners during the Awards Breakfast at its 66th Annual Professional Development Conference at the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront on October 20.
