Welcome to Academics

Sarasota County Schools is pleased and proud to have retained an "A" grade and to be one of only two districts in the State to have earned an "A" every year since grading districts began in 2004. We are proud of our dedicated teachers who provide outstanding learning experiences for every student . . .every day.  We are also grateful for the expertise provided to our teachers from every staff member who supports our children and the outstanding leaders in our District.

Middle School IB programs

Below are a few programs we would like to highlight. Clink on the link to see great video clips that spotlight these programs.

  • The Reading Recovery program is a national "what works" program that supports our struggling readers in first grade. Seventy-five percent of the thousands of students who go through the program throughout the country read on grade level. In Sarasota County last year, we outperformed the nation when 86% of our children achieved success! The advanced techniques that teachers learn in the program help them provide better instruction for all of their students. We are very appreciative of the community support that brought Reading Recovery to us! Thank you to the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, Gulf Coast Community Foundation, and their many donors. We are also very appreciative of the leadership provided by Lisa Fisher (our Teacher Leader), Dr. Lea McGee (our retired Ohio State University professor), Veronica Brady with Gulf Coast Community Foundation, and Teri Hansen with the Barancik Foundation. Special thanks to Keith and Linda Monda for initiating this implementation!
  • The iReady system provides additional customized learning to every K-8 student and helps teachers see where individual students need support. Parents can learn more about iReady by clicking here.
  • Summer Learning Academies are being launched and expanded across the district to help prevent summer learning loss while providing experiential opportunities in the arts.  We are so grateful to community members Joe and Mary Kay Henson for conceiving this program with Alta Vista Elementary's Dr. Barbara Shirley and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
  • The Suncoast Campaign for Grade Level Reading initiative is teaching parents how important being at school on time every day is to their child’s academic success. This initiative supports early learning programs, efforts to extend summer learning, and ways to ensure healthy families. We are proud to partner with the Patterson Foundation in this initiative.
  • Through the generosity of the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, teachers undergo training and collaboration on lesson planning through a grant entitled ' Making Sarasota #1 in Math'.  See some of the resources utilized in math planning in the Maximizing Math Mentality Wikispace Page!
  • Middle school students study in STEM Smart Tech-Active Classrooms of Tomorrow. In those classrooms, teachers and students work together on highly engaging, project-based instruction using the latest instructional technology and tools available. This program was made possible thanks to the continued financial support from Gulf Coast Community Foundation and the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation.
  • High schools are improving both the graduation rate and the number of students who take advanced course work through a wide variety of rigorous and special-diploma programs.

We are very proud to have earned an "A" from the State, but until every student graduates as an expert reader, a strong critical thinker, prepared to succeed in college or a career, and committed to lifelong learning, we still have room for improvement. We will aggressively recruit and retain the best possible staff, equipping them with the knowledge and resources they need to help every student succeed and strive each year to improve our performance over the year before.

Every Student . . .Every Day . . . Whatever It Takes!
