National History Day

National History Day (NHD) is an opportunity that elevates research and writing skills, nurtures creative expression, offers opportunities for alternative assessment, enriches the curriculum, and helps students find their voice as young historians.  Implemented internationally for almost 50 years, NHD is a program designed for middle and high schoolers to choose a topic based on an annual theme, conduct research, develop a unique evidence-based argument, and create a website, historical paper, documentary, exhibit, or performance.  Students’ projects are created in the classroom, then advance to district, state, and national contests.  Projects are evaluated, and students are interviewed by judges at all levels.  Students receive positive and constructive feedback and make revisions, which helps them reflect and learn.  It is an experience that inspires confidence and prepares them for the world beyond their secondary education.  These priceless interactions and experiences set precedents for future academic endeavors.  In our educational community, NHD elevates the academic standard, fosters disciplinary literacy, contributes to High Expectations Teaching.  Students are empowered to challenge themselves, taught to appreciate how the past impacts the future, while preparing for college, career, and citizenship.

Please visit NHD.org for more information related to this year's theme as well as more information about National History Day.
