Teachers, staff ratify board-approved 3-percent raise

SARASOTA – Following School Board approval Nov. 20 of a 3 percent salary increase for teachers and other district staff, instructional and classified employees ratified the agreement. The results of the vote were announced yesterday by the Sarasota Classified / Teachers Association (SC/TA), which represents the district’s 2,916 teachers and 2,316 support staff.

More than 92 percent of the 2,010 instructional employees who voted approved ratification, while over 91 percent of the 1,292 classified workers who voted checked “yes” on their ballots. While the district’s 215 administrators were not eligible to vote, the ratification by teachers and other staff members means that they will also receive the 3 percent salary increase approved by the Board in a separate motion Nov. 20. Payments for all employees, retroactive to July 1, will appear in December paychecks.

The salary increase is smaller than last year’s raise of 5.25 percent. School revenue across Florida has been reduced as the housing market has cooled and economic growth has slowed. School districts also are being fiscally conservative in anticipation of further revenue reductions that could result from a statewide property tax referendum on the ballot in January.

School Board member Shirley Brown said she and her colleagues on the Board appreciate the professionalism of SC/TA members, both in the schools and at the bargaining table. "We are approving a contract that's not what it's been in the past," she said. "People all know that, in light of the cuts from Tallahassee. We sure know they deserve more than 3 percent, but the reality is that's all we could afford to give this year."

SC/TA President Pat Gardner said, “It’s a good settlement when you consider the problems with the economy in the state.”

Gardner said about 80 percent of the classified employees of Sarasota County Schools are SC/TA members, but all instructional and classified employees are eligible to vote in the ratification process.

Sarasota County schools honor veterans

To ensure that all students in the Sarasota County Schools are well informed about the contributions and sacrifices made by veterans of all of the wars the United States has fought in defense of freedom, schools throughout the district have organized special instructional units and programs on Nov. 9 to celebrate Veterans Day and honor veterans. Many schools have invited veterans to participate in the celebrations and schools throughout the district have posted the message: “Land of the Free, Because of the Brave” on their school billboards.

As part of his instructional unit explaining to a fourth-grade class what a veteran is, teacher Rolf Hanson at Bay Haven School of Basics Plus also talked to his students about a non-governmental organization called Veterans for Peace. Hanson also proposed including the names of members of that organization and conscientious objectors on a banner his class was preparing for the school celebration on Friday.

When Bay Haven Principal Betsy Asheim-Dean learned of Hanson’s comments to his class and his idea for the banner, she explained that the discussion was not age-appropriate for a fourth-grade class and that including anyone other than veterans in the general school celebration also would be inappropriate. Hanson has complied with her direction.

Although some news reports and calls to talk shows have indicated otherwise, the Bay Haven Veterans Day celebration will honor veterans only and will make no reference to conscientious objectors or Veterans for Peace. Nor is any further instruction on those subjects anticipated in any Bay Haven classroom.

Letter From Superintendent to Veterans and Patriotic Americans

To: Veterans and Patriotic Americans
Re: Bay Haven School

FACTS:

1. Bay Haven School of Basics Plus is holding a Veterans Day ceremony tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 9 at 9:30 a.m., to honor American veterans of all wars, past and present.

2. The ceremony will be a traditional salute to veterans — one of many that will be held throughout the Sarasota County school district. The School Board of Sarasota County and the administration of Sarasota County Schools encourage schools to hold Veterans Day ceremonies that celebrate the contributions of American veterans.

3. A fourth-grade classroom teacher at Bay Haven, within the context of a discussion about American veterans, talked to his students about the idea that some veterans of wars later become “Veterans for Peace” (There is a national organization by that name).

4. The Bay Haven School Veterans Day ceremony will not include recognition of, or references to, the organization Veterans for Peace or conscientious objectors.

5. The teacher in question complied with each request made by Principal Betsy Asheim-Dean.

6. The principal did not state that she could not regulate what the teacher presented to the students, despite what callers may have stated on the Rush Limbaugh Radio Show.

7. As Superintendent of Schools, I proudly plan to ride in Sarasota’s Veterans Day parade and attend our community celebration on Sunday.

8. Last week, I directed that school billboards in Sarasota County display the phrase, “Land of the Free…Because of the Brave.”

9. Any attempt to paint our district in a light other than honoring and supporting veterans is simply false.
