I. Welcome
Peter Straw called the meeting to order at 5:35 p.m. He welcomed the group.
A motion by Regina,
seconded by Javier, approved the minutes.
II. Director’s
Report
·
Enrollment Summary: Adult technical enrollment
increased. Roland suggested a rolling average of the last twelve months for
comparison.
·
Budget: There is no information and no time
schedule.
IIl. Old
Business
·
Technical
High School: There was a presentation to the School Board
on February 14. With the passing of the referendum, the planning should go
forward. Building could be done in
several phases.
·
The Council reviewed the written progress report
from Carol Darling. The money for the
revision will be from the 06-07 budget.
·
Subcommittee Report: The committee met on
February 28: The individuals participating included representatives from Sarasota Memorial Hospital,
Louis Maltaghati, Harlean Satin, Bruce Andersen and Terrie Minter. The
committee discussed the health community training needs and determined a need
for additional training in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) area. A custom CNA training program will be
scheduled over the summer months using Springwood as the clinical site.
·
There was a meeting today with the City of Sarasota to forge a plan
to offer GED preparation instruction onsite at their location.
·
Bill Costello indicated a need for coordination
with EMT so that fire departments do not overlap each other.
IV. New Business
- School
Improvement Plan has a core element for staff development. The second part of Rigor and Relevance
was offered on March 17. Gold seal
lessons were used to develop new lessons and they were discussed. Feedback will be sought from the
teachers. 65-70 people
attended. Roland suggested a better
day of the week and a non-holiday for the sessions next year. The session will be repeated on
weeknights.
- Changing
demographics in the school district resulted in a drop in growth this
year. 1500 new students were
expected, but only 500 enrolled.
SCTI’s adult ESOL population is decreasing, down 12% in the last
two years. The Adult High School
is down 63% over the last two years.
These statistics will impact planning. Louis would like to compare statistics
to Manatee County.
V.
Other
- Carolyn
Haworth, Mote Marine, and Mickey Anderson, Cortez Heating, have
resigned. Two representatives are
needed to replace them.
- Johnny
Hunter suggested Calvin Bryant for membership, to whom Bruce and Peter
will speak before the next meeting.
- Roland
suggested that the Chamber of Commerce might ask membership for interested
parties, through their newsletter.
- Bill
Costello reported on the RFP for the Beneva Road
Burn Building. Planning continues on a joint training
facility at Knights
Trail Park;
the proposed ten classrooms are not sufficient to meet current and future
training needs. At this time, the
School Board has not formally committed to participate at the Knights
Trail site; Bruce will check on the status of the Board’s commitment.
