Directors Report

Director Andersen discussed the January enrollment summary document.  It was noted that the lower figure in the adult enrollment is a result of the January 2 date the report was run.  The winter semester did not start until January 3.

Mellissa Morrow  has been selected as the Sarasota County School Board (SCSB) Director of Career & Technical Education (CTE) and will be starting on March 1, 2006.  Director Andersen forwarded SAC’s invitation for Mellissa to attend a meeting – a date will be established for the visit after she starts

The SCTI Assistant Director vacancy was noted.  The current job posting closes on January 27th; interviews will be conducted in early to mid-February.

Old Business

Special Focus Programs – The special focus programs (Network Support, Surgical Tech, and Culinary Arts) are currently undergoing an internal review.  This will be completed around April 1, 2006.  The results of the review will be shared with the SAC at the May meeting.

Website revision – Carol Darling is working with a website designer to research the process that should be followed and the information needed before SCTI can develop an RFP to revise the website.  An update will be provided the SAC members on a monthly basis

Industry Visits – There will be two industry visits during the next few months.

1.      January 31, 2006 – Economic Development Corporation provided funds to pay for food and bus to transport approximately 25 8th grade students and one parent/guardian to participate in a visit to PGT.  SCTI is conducting this tour.

2.      “Made in Florida” tours of surrounding manufacturing businesses will begin on March 22 with a tour of Sun Hydraulics.  The tours will continue into May.  The funding for the tours is through a grant secured by Sarasota Manatee Manufacturing Association (SAMA) from Florida High Tech Corridor Council.  SAMA is conducting these tours.

New Business

Based on a request from the membership, SAC was provided information on the SCSB referendum scheduled for March 14.   The presentation included information on what is being asked of the voters, how the dollars from the previous referendum have been spent over the last 4 years, the NexXt Generation Learning plan, and how the money will be spent if/when the referendum is approved by the voters.  It concluded with information about the consequences if the referendum fails.
