SAC/SDMT Extra SIP Presentation MEETING

January 21, 2004

 

M I N U T E S

Meeting called to order at 3:10 p.m.

 

Those in attendance: Marta Calabrese, Lorna Combs, Sheri Paulsen, Ann Putnam, Dotti Rosenfield, James Anderson, Cheryl Farr, Judy Aquila, Luan Hedley, Jennifer McMahon, Peggy Krammes, Sue Rowe and Kate O’Connell.

The following agreements were made about how the old SIP data and the new Strategic Plan for Excellence goals should be presented to the school board.

 

Daniel Combs, Lorna Combs, and Jim Anderson will recite Mission Statement.

 

Mrs. Dearing will introduce the format for the presentation.

 

Slide show will be running in the back of the media center on the old screen as board members enter.

 

Today we will be addressing the six areas that were identified as priority needs according to our needs assessment: reading, math, writing, science, technology, and safe and orderly schools.

 

READING Data presentation by Mrs. Dearing. We recently hired and ESOL to help our limited English speaking children in reading and math.

Judy Aquila and Luan Hedley need to find parent and student to help with presentation. (Effect on my child.)

          SuccessMaker, Marie Carbo, SRA, FCAT Explorer, guided reading (multiple copies of level tradebooks, special grouping, extensive diagnostic assessments, parent and community volunteers, Brookside tutors, peer tutoring, departmentalization at 5th grade.  Professional development provided for teachers. Curriculum mapping, AR.

Data analysis to drive instruction (comparisons, cause & effect are areas targeted by data coaches for faculty on which to focus), after school tutorial, FCAT night for parents, Parent Passport to Success (Jennifer). PSSN kids reading news. Book review. Tape on TV “And now we will show you one of our students on PSSN news presenting a book review.”

       We put out some samples of the tools we use to encourage/promote the success in reading for all students.

 

Static displays—Marie Carbo, SRA, Curriculum mappimg, SuccessMaker reports, guided reading selections—SLIDE SHOW of pix of kids using each of these products, Data Analysis binder.

 

MATHEMATICS: Data presented by Mrs. Dearing.

Kris Martin in charge with Marta Calabrese.  Needs to find parent and student to help with presentation.

          Specific training- hands on equations, exploring the use of a variety of texts to meet specific needs, professional development opportunities, SuccessMaker, grouping, departmentalization, use of manipulatives, extensive diagnostic testing, data analysis to drive instruction (algebraic thinking and number sense are the areas targeted by data coaches for faculty on which to focus).

PRESENTATION OF DATA BINDERS RUTH BENNEAR in charge.

 

WRITING: Data presented by Mrs. Dearing – writing is so important that the SAC decided to devote a teaching unit to the hiring of a writing coach.  Sue Rowe will now enlighten you about our writing program for grades K – 5.

 

Sue Rowe in charge --find parent and child. Sue will probably be bringing in her writing cart or work samples of the children as a static display.

 

SCIENCE: Data presented by Mrs. Dearing! – (Mrs. Dearing, find out why we have Spectrum from Peggy and Peggy wanted to know what data was being presented—county tests?) Spectrum and Science Fair.

TECHNOLOGY: Data presented by Mrs. Dearing!

   Cynthia McGrail in charge – find parent and child. Cynthia will be showcasing FCAT Explorer and the mobile cart in her presentation.

 

 

SAFE AND ORDERLY SCHOOLS:

 Linda WoodRay PeetzJennifer McMahon– Parent for pick-up, SCIAT, Assertiveness/Identifying a Bully training, Character Education.

 

CLOSING:  IB and new school. (put out plans) Mrs.Dearing

“We hope that the quality of our new building equals the quality of the education are students are being given.”

Kate O’Connell would like to speak for parents about the building project.

 

“We are not looking a magnet program, but a seemless progression through the IB program.”

 

Board members along with snacking on light refreshments and enjoying the slide show on the big screen can visit static displays.

Peggy Krammes will invite board members to tour the Spectrum lab and computer labs if they would like to.

 

Flags out campus wide with a School/Welcome theme. 

Decorating and refreshment committee: Dotti, Sheri, and Jane. will work on table decorations and refreshments.

         

Individual presenters can seek ideas or requests for hilighting specific activities that occur across the campus through the BBS.

 

There will be a “dry run” of the presentation on Monday, February 2 at 3:15 in the media center. Areas for static displays will be assigned that day.

There will be a full rehearsal set up of static displays on Tuesday, February 3 at 3:15 in the media center.

The presentation will be on Wednesday, February 4 at 3:15 in the media center.

 

The committee also approved the request by Sue Rowe, Marta Calabrese and Peggy Krammes to attend the NBPTS Conference in March. Tina can proceed with funding that conference.
