Approval of Revised Work Habits Policy

A discussion took place regarding the history of our school’s work habits criteria. The homeroom teacher will give each student a PASS or FAIL in the grade column as well as a grade for each student’s efforts. A total of 17 or more tallies (ten tallies for students in advanced work classes) in any combination of the eight work habits areas, within one grading period, will result in failure of work habits.  A student passing work habits should not receive an “unsatisfactory” for an effort grade.  A student failing work habits should not receive an “excellent” for an effort grade

The work habits grade considers eight areas:

·         Unexcused absences

·         Tardiness (unless a medical excuse is provided)

·         Prepared with required work tools: paper, pencils, books, etc.

·         Maintenance of an agenda book/homework folder (grades 3-5 only)

·         Completion of homework and turned in on time

·         Appropriate dress for class (refer to Student/Family Handbook)

·         Attitude of cooperation with staff and students – follows school and classroom rules

·         Time in class devoted to appropriate task

Teachers will return to their teams to further discuss whether to accept the drafted policy as written or to modify it so ALL students have the same number of tallies as the criterion for passing/failing work habits tallies across the board. When SAC/SDMT meets again, we will vote on the issue.

Fifth Grade Writing Prompt

As part of our School Improvement Plan, Lakeview students in grades K-3 have a pre-and post- schoolwide writing prompt in the fall and the spring. The tests consist of expository and narrative prompts.  Grade 4 has a pre- and post- expository writing prompt in the fall.  Fifth grade has three persuasive prompts throughout the year.  Students are assessed on expository and persuasive writings in eighth grade.  Starting next year, 5th grade will have a pre- and post- expository writing prompt in the fall, and a pre- and post- persuasive writing prompt in the spring.
