Barbara
Witte presented a draft of the SAC Operational Guidelines for the Adult and
Community Education Center - Item # 2 on the agenda. Barbara Witte explained that
guidelines for SAC came to The Adult and Community Education Center via
Camille Ashcraft, Director of Instructional Support Services for Sarasota
County School Board. These guidelines
are put together by Ms. Ashcraft to fit the needs of our district. Barbara reviewed the guidelines and revised
them to meet the needs of the Adult and Community Education Center.
Barbara explained that these guidelines indicate how
a School Advisory Council should operate.
All members reviewed the draft and changes/corrections were
suggested.
Beverly Stockton motioned to accept the SAC
Operational Guidelines with suggested changes.
Jerrie Graham seconded the motion.
The motion was approved to accept the Operational Guidelines with
suggested changes.

from this meeting.
v Barbara Witte distributed to all members and guests a copy of the School Improvement Plan for 2002-2003. It was noted that when the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) review team visited they wanted to know why “Mathematics” was not one of our points of focus (goals) on our School Improvement Plan. The question arose whether or not ACEC should be addressing this goal. There is a low percentage of our students that this goal would effect. Judy Rinks commented that the SACS team would also like for ACEC to have more emphasis on Family Involvement. It was noted that the SAC members will study the commendations and recommendations from the SACS review and include the recommendations in our School Improvement Plan. We will take the 2002-2003 School Improvement Plan and build on it with these recommendations. An ACEC Management Team meeting will be scheduled in the future to take the recommendations and come up with activities to meet our goals for incorporation into our School Improvement Plan. Otherwise, we are in great shape with our three goals of focus (Literacy, Technology, and Career Preparation).
Edna Apostol, in regard to community involvement, stated that student imput is very valuable and recommended that a student council be formed with representation from each of our program areas. This idea will be explored and taken into consideration to be discussed at a future SAC meeting. Edna Apostol motioned to accept the 2002-2003 School Improvement Plan as written with the condition that the plan will be revisited to incorporate the SACS recommendations. Barbara Witte amended the motion to include the language: “after a review of the SACS exit report by the ACEC Management Team”. Beverly Stockton seconded the motion with the amendment. The motioned was approved unanimously to accept the School Improvement plan with conditions noted.
v
Discussion
moved to item number seven on the agenda regarding the School Improvement Process
Peer Review Report - SACS. Judy Rinks
distributed a copy of the SACS review final report to all SAC members and
guests. Judy suggested that the SAC
committee members review the document on their own and pay special attention to
the recommendations made by the team.
Once reviewed, SAC members could submit their ideas on how to
incorporate any of the recommendations into the School Improvement Plan to
Stephania Feltz by December. Stephania
Feltz would then share these ideas with the ACEC Management Team.
v
Discussion
moved to item number 5 on the agenda regarding the Florida Board of
Education. Stephania Feltz shared the
reorganization of the State Department of Education.
v
Discussion
moved to item number 6 on the agenda regarding Technical School Visits. During the September SAC meeting, Dr. Delp
explained that a program review team would be visiting various Technical High
Schools and that a ACEC representative would be welcome to join the team for
these visits. Stephania Feltz shared
with SAC members that several schools have been visited recently. Edna Apostol gave an overview of her visit
to William McFadden Technical High School in Broward County. Stephania Feltz gave an overview of her
visit to the Sussex Technical High School in Georgetown, Delaware.
Pros and cons were discussed in regards to both
schools, as well as, how they relate to The Adult and Community Education
Center. The focus seems to be on how to
provide a Technical High School. How
does ACEC fit into this concept? Edna stated
that the schools visited seemed to have an emphasis on high school
students. McFadden integrates adults
with high school students, whereas the Sussex Technical High School strongly
suggests keeping the programs separate.
The program review team that visited the Sussex Technical High School
was very impressed with the school and hoped that the future director of SCTI
would share the same philosophy of the integration of academics programs and
the vocational programs.
Judy Rinks asked that as the School Advisory
Council, if we want to have the right to know what the recommendations will be
prior to January.
v
The
next meeting will take place on November 21, 2002 at 9:00 a.m. in the East
Conference Room of the Adult and Community Education Center.
v
Stephania
Feltz adjourned the meeting.
