SCS Text Messaging FAQs

The Sarasota County Schools subscribe to a service called Connect-ED through which the district and individual schools can send telephone messages to families about school events and activities, student attendance and information about unusual situations such as lockdowns or power failures.

Recently the district has expanded the service to include email and text messages. Emails of phone messages are sent to every household that provides their school an email address.

Text messages also will be sent to phones that are identified in the school data base as a text-enabled number. When that service started, a message was sent to all text-enabled phones to ask permission to continue to send messages or for the recipient to have the opportunity to stop receiving text messages from the school district.

The email and text services are useful because of their convenience and because messages may be prioritized to allow families to receive news from schools as an email or text rather than receiving a phone call.

The answers below address the most common questions families ask about the texting service. If you have a question that is not addressed here, please call the district Communications Department at 941-927-4009 or email Debbie.tippen@sarasotacountyschools.net.

Q:    How do I opt-in to receive text messages from the Sarasota County Schools?
A:    As a message recipient, you can provide your text-enabled phone number to your student’s school to input that information.

Q:    What happens after I sign up to receive text messages?
A:    After your text-enabled phone number is entered into the system, the Blackboard
Connect service will send a text message to your mobile phone to confirm your request.

Q:    What will the confirmation message say?
A:    The confirmation message will read the following: Sarasota Cnty Schools: You are set to receive txt alerts per acct settings. For more info reply HELP. To opt out, reply STOP TXT4SCS. Msg&data rates may apply.

Q:    What happens if I text reply HELP?
A:    If you text reply HELP, you will receive the following message: Bb Connect notifications. Users receive relevant alerts. For more info, go to www.blackboardconnect.com/sms, sms@blackboard.com. To opt-out text STOP TXT4SCS.

Q:    From what number will these text messages originate?
A:    All confirmation text messages and subsequent alerts will come from 23177 or 63079. Please save these numbers and program them as SarasotaCntySchools so you can quickly recognize these numbers as the official sources of messages from the district or your student’s school.

Q:    I did not receive a confirmation message. What happened?
A:    Please check with your mobile phone provider to find out if your device accepts text messages. You may also want to check with your provider to see if text messaging has been enabled. You may need to subscribe to a text messaging plan in order to receive or reply to text messages. Message and data rates may apply.

Q:    I did not receive a confirmation message because my phone was not text enabled. I have since contacted my mobile phone provider to enable it. Do I need another confirmation message sent?
A:    No. If your SMS phone was already submitted to our database, you should be confirmed to receive SMS alerts. However, you can check if you are opted-in by texting the word SUBSCRIBE to 23177 or 63079 and you will receive the following reply: Sarasota Cnty Schools: This phone number has already been opted in. More info text reply HELP or STOP TXT4SCS to opt-out

Q:    How do I opt-out?
A:    You may opt-out at any time by texting STOP TXT4SCS or QUIT TXT4SCS to 23177 or 63079, and you will receive the following reply: Sarasota Cnty Schools: You are now confirmed to stop receiving text messages from TXT4SCS. More info, text reply HELP or go to www.blackboardconnect.com/sms.

Q:    What if I opted-out but later decide I would like to opt-in again?
A:    You may request to begin receiving text messages by texting SUBSCRIBE TXT4SCS to 23177 or 63079.

Q:    Who pays for the text messages I receive on my phone?
A:    You are subject to all applicable messaging charges depending on your service provider. Standard message and data rates may apply.

Q:    If I change mobile phone providers but keep the same number, do I need to opt-in again?
A:    No.  Once your phone number has been opted-in, it stays registered within the system.
